I have a couple of projects staring me in the face right now. They’re pretty large – and when I think about how much I have to do it can be pretty overwhelming.
Sometimes it’s okay not to look at the big picture. Temporarily, of course. If the big view of things makes you panic, then stop for a moment. Take a smaller, more manageable piece and do it. Or do part of it. Just make sure that what you’re doing is actually helping you make progress towards your goal.
I’ve mentioned that my desk has a large …read more

How do you retrieve email?

How do you retrieve email?

I was reading a post over at Web Worker Daily about email. In it, they discuss two types of email users – filers and finders.
The filers use lots of folders to categorize and file away their email. I can remember doing this in Outlook. You see, Outlook’s search function is terrible. So I would file by project or department or whatever seemed appropriate at the time.
Unfortunately, when it came to finding those emails, it wasn’t always easy to remember where I filed it. Was it by project A? Or department B? Or did I put it in the folder where …read more

You need to be aware that losing your most valuable files is a very real possibility. …read more

IRS tax class for self-employed individuals

IRS tax class for self-employed individuals

This is something we all should take time out to learn more about: taxes. As a small business owner, it is essential that you understand record keeping for tax purposes. You must keep this information on file in case of an audit. And of course, you want to be able to find those files, so you should keep your paperwork organized.
The IRS is offering a free phone forum on October 22nd called “Recordkeeping for Small Business Self-Employed Individuals. The site states that you will learn what books and records are, why they’re needed, who should have them, and how long …read more

var iamInit = function() {try{initIamServingHandler(234,348,172505,”http://pis.picapp.com/IamProd/Resources/Css/css2.css”)}catch(ex){}}()
There are a few small tasks that need to be done that I just keep putting off. Over and over. When I remember that they need to get done, it’s the wrong time. Inconvenient. Or maybe just not possible (as in, I’m not in the same place as the task) at that time.
I confess that I haven’t captured those small tasks. And coincidentally, I haven’t been feeling as organized as I’d like. Because these little things keep bothering me even when I’m not really thinking about them.
I’m a list person. I have to write things down. …read more

Giveaway: One year subscription to Carbonite online backup service

We rely so heavily on our computers and electronic data. A small business could easily be devastated in the event of a hard drive failure or natural disaster. You need to regularly back up your data – at least once a week, and ideally even more than that.
To help small business owners along these lines, Carbonite is offering a free one year subscription to My Organized Biz readers. Here’s some information from them:
It’s never too late for small business owners to consider how they can best organize and prepare for potentially catastrophic affects such as fires, natural disasters or hard …read more

Tackle that messy desk

var iamInit = function() {try{initIamServingHandler(234,351,167906,”http://pis.picapp.com/IamProd/Resources/Css/css2.css”)}catch(ex){}}()
When I was a teenager, I had a sign above my desk that said, “A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind.” It was perfect for my clutter justification. But I was constantly frustrated and unable to find anything without going through every single pile on the desk.
Eventually I learned to keep my desk neater. I started using my file drawer. I bought little organizers for my desktop and drawers. And I regularly cleaned it.
Those bad habits are slowly creeping back in. I know what I need to do. The problem is taking the …read more
