Tip #13: Get a Separate Fax Line

This is another one of those time value of money tips.

When we first started our business, we had one phone line. We didn’t think we needed another. We were wrong.

The time that it took to schedule sending faxes and making calls, plus the agita of having to inform anyone and everyone that we needed advance notice before receiving a fax was ridiculous. And yes, while there are fax machines that purport to automatically make the switch from phone to fax for you, they don’t always work well in conjunction with voice mail or answering machines.

As a business owner, I found the disruptions and occasional mistakes much more costly than the $20-30 the extra fax line cost.

Extra benefits?

It looks better on a business card to have a separate phone/fax number. And if you need an additional line - you can use the fax line on occasion. Well worth the cost.

I quite agree with this tip. I have found that a physical fax line is not always as effective for my business, however. As a productivity consultant, I am frequently not in the office when I need to receive a fax. I now use eFax. It is an excellent system that allows me to have faxes sent at any time and they show up as PDF files in my email. If I need to, I can then forward the attachment to any other person that works for the company for follow up. I also love it because it is a GREEN solution. I usually do not need to print the fax, so it stays electronic. I pay under 18 a month for the service.

Rather than a separate line, I use efax for the occasional faxes I still need to receive…

I agree Kelly. An additional line for the fax is not only convenient but looks and sounds much more professional.
