Tip #14: Keep Cards and Gift Certificates On Hand

It’s difficult to remember every occasion that might call for a greeting card or gift. Birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, promotions, Secretary’s Day, the list is endless.

And nothing is more embarrassing - and time consuming - than trying to find a florist or baker that will deliver on a moment’s notice.

The solution? Keep a stash of cards for all occasions in your desk (I bought a variety pack from the National Wildlife Federation). That way, you can whip one out when needed.

It’s also helpful to keep gift cards or gift certificates on hand. You can buy them in a few denominations from almost anywhere - local businesses as well as national chains (those you can pick up at pharmacies) - and keep them in your desk. In a pinch, handing your secretary a gift card to Red Lobster not only brings out the seafood lover in him or her but makes you look like you remembered (even if you only sort of, kind of did).

The downside to the gift cards or gift certificates is that many expire after one year so don’t overstock. Three or four is likely all that you need and you can replace them as necessary.
