The B5Media network:

Are you safe when wireless?

(www.myorgnaizedbiz.com) - A coffeehouse may be a good place to meet a client, but it’s not the safest place to use your laptop. Free wireless networks can leave your computer, data, and passwords vulnerable to hacking – and the consequences to your business can be huge. Consider that this risk could shut your doors for weeks or longer.

The good news for technogeeks and small business owners alike is that a prototype device has been created that will allow computer devices and laptops to operate securely in an otherwise potentially risky wireless hotspot. The TED is about to revolutionize safety.

It’s very true that the convenience of wireless, whether at coffeeshops or in the airport or anywhere else, makes it easy to overlook the security issues.

Hi, Grace! Thanks for the comment and the article link – it’s a great resource!

Escaping to a cafe to work can be good for small business owners, but the security risk is so high. I’m looking forward to a time when wi-fi is safe and secure. It can’t be too far away.

    You’re welcome.

You know, if you’re just escaping to the cafe for some time to write and brainstorm and maybe do some unstressful planning, there’s no worries. Just don’t connect to the wi-fi, and you’ve got no security exposure!

…Unless you’re an internet junkie and can’t resist. :) I suppose I could leave the wireless card at home – that’d work.
