Balancing a Job & Business
Many of us find our home businesses supplement what we make at a job or enable us to work at our outside job parttime. However, we do need to balance the two and ration our time. In other words, we must be organized, yet still allow for the unexpected.
For instance, I’m writing this blog post later in the day than I expected. I was supposed to be home from my summer job at shortly after 1 PM. It was after 3 PM when I actually made it home because an employee went home ill and some of us stayed later to make sure the work was completed.
So…how do I make up the time with my blog writing at home? I become more organized and try to be efficient with my time. I reorganize my “to do” list and get to work on those that absolutely have to be done today. Do I get up early to complete the others in the morning before church?
I found, years ago, that working as a newspaper reporter and meeting deadlines there helped me to organize my writing in my head so that I didn’t need so many revisions or massive revision when writing columns, news stories, and now blogs. Try to organize writing in your mind so that you can do stories in less time.
This afternoon, I also had to get supper, do some household chores that couldn’t be put off. I don’t have children to care for as our daughter and her family are self-sufficient even though they live with us. However, many of you have that additional balancing act.
How do you balance an outside the home job with a small or home business, along with family? Why not share some of your tips?
