Organized traveling

Organized traveling

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – I like my routines. I think I need them. It’s one thing that helps me feel in control when things are crazy. But when you travel, there’s no such thing as routine.
Travel throws off my organizing routines, too. Mail lies unopened. Emails can go unanswered (spotty internet access, and all that jazz).
But the main thing that gets me is things aren’t in their ‘place’. I like to put items in the same spot each time. It helps my poor memory. If I move things around too much I forget where they are supposed to be. When you can’t …read more

Saying ‘no’

Saying ‘no’

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – It’s so easy to over-schedule ourselves. What I’m hearing from many of you is how hard it is to balance everything. We are all busy: work, family, kids, pets, friends, hobbies, and more.
With the internet allowing us to stay in touch everyone and everything, our connectedness can actually get overwhelming. And we want to please everyone, too.
We want to give our clients what they want and need. We need our colleagues to get what they need, in case we later need their help. We provide our employees with many things, too. And then there are the family obligations. …read more

Work-life balance

Work-life balance

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – Sometimes, as small business owners and entrepreneurs, we find it too easy to work. All the time. There’s always so much to do, right? And if we don’t get it done, who else will do it?
Right now I’m struggling with balancing everything. I have a lot of projects going, a lot of balls in the air. Fortunately, a bigger project is about ready to end. I’m mostly okay with that.
What it will do is free up my time for other projects. The ones that are getting bits and pieces here and there, rather than a good, solid bit …read more

Stopping procrastination

Stopping procrastination

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – I have a lot on my plate right now, it seems. I’m sure we all do. With the economy and saving money at the forefront of my thoughts, it’s sometimes hard to get motivated to work on longer-term projects. Okay, even the immediate ones suffer a bit.
Throw in childcare, housework, and errands, and I wonder when I’ll get it all done. It sure does make it easier to put things off. You know, that dirty little word that isn’t so little. Procrastination.
I was a horrible procrastinator as a kid. I had chores to do every day and …read more

Phoning it in

Phoning it in

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – Phones are an integral part of our business. None of us can get by without calling a client or customer, a supplier, a colleague. As such, we place a high importance on phone calls, don’t we?
I have a friend who has to answer the phone every time it rings, even if she’s walking out the door to an appointment. It has made her late and frustrated the people who have to wait on her. She has voice mail and I’ve encouraged her many times to just let it go. But she can’t. She was taught that phone calls …read more

Honeymoon clarity and changes at MyOrganizedBiz

Honeymoon clarity and changes at MyOrganizedBiz

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – My honeymoon was a life-changing event for my business.
Before I left, my biz complained that I was going for 6 whole days. It worried that my email was on autorespond and my phone was off with an “I’ll call you back in 6 days” message on it. When I walked out the door with my bags, it was seriously fretting.
My business moped around the whole time I was gone, waiting for me to get back so I could again pour into it my undivided attention and 110% of my time, energy, sweat, and tears.
But when I …read more

Tip of the week: Prioritizing made easy

Tip of the week: Prioritizing made easy

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – Have you ever had those days when you can’t decide where to start? You have the luxury of a few hours to get things done, but you feel uncertain and unmotivated about where to begin.
If you’re having that kind of day, make a quick trip to The Prioritizer from Idea Sandbox. In a few minutes, and a few A or B choices, you have a prioritized list generated for you.
Here’s what I found when I tried it: I was uncertain about which things I really wanted to do more, so I just put them all in. I didn’t …read more

Long-term project “group think”

Long-term project “group think”

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – Are you among the many people who have great ideas that get started and never completed? Before you get harsh with yourself about what a slacker you are, just know that this is a super normal thing. Go easy on yourself.
I bring up this topic because long term projects are a part of every business. We all have marketing ideas, product ideas, and a gazillion other things on the back burner that we’d like to do someday. The fact that they get started at all is remarkable considering how busy life is!
A client recently asked me how she …read more

How to clean off your desk in 15 minutes or less

How to clean off your desk in 15 minutes or less

Ready?
Move your chair – If you’re seated, you might be likely to check email or get distracted. So move your chair away from your desk. Stand in front of your desk and give yourself a big picture view.
Set?
Get a timer – Whether it’s lemon-shaped or on your phone, set it for 15 minutes.
Go!
Rev your engine and start moving. Only pick up one thing at a time and then make a decision about where it should go – recycling, garbage, files, mail, etc.

Toss (recycle) anything you haven’t looked at in over a month and/or “might need someday”. Chances are good you …read more

Is Saturday is the new Tuesday?

Is Saturday is the new Tuesday?

Conventional wisdom and corporate researchers have said that Tuesday is the most productive day of the week. By Tuesday, the catch-up of Monday is complete and this allows you to really get down to business.
When Glen Stansberry at LifeDev recently wrote about how Friday is the new Saturday, it got me thinking.
There seems to be an emerging trend in home business where Saturday is eclipsing Tuesday as the most productive day.
Basically, Saturday works because:

Clients aren’t calling.
Email volume goes down dramatically.
Some businesses and most government offices are closed (so you can’t visit them).
The expectation of productivity by others is …read more
