The B5Media network:

Getting rest is important

Here’s where I need to take my own advice on things. As I’ve mentioned before, sharpening your saw is an important part of being organized. If you don’t rest and renew, you won’t be very effective.

I’ve been trying to get my schedule under control so I’m not working too many hours (which I am right now) late into the night. Maybe that’s part of being a mom. Or an entrepreneur. Or both.

But burning the candle at both ends isn’t going to make me perform at my best. So it’s time to revamp the schedule and get out of this late-night deal that I’ve slid into.

Do you find that you’re working too many hours, staying up way too late? Is your work suffering yet?

While my work isn’t suffering from the fact that I feel like I work too many hours, I know that it has been taken a toll on my mental health. Being bone tired when I get back to my place means that I fall right to sleep instead of doing something relaxing or something that I enjoy like cooking.

It also means that I rarely have the energy or the amount of time that I would like to dedicate to my running and workouts.

I feel like working too much is one of those things that slowly sucks the life out of you, and that you rarely realize that it’s doing it until you’re running on practically nothing.

@Nicholas – Planning rest can be a good idea. I especially like to rest my eyes during my lunch break.

@Jeff – You might try cutting back gradually – just a couple of hours a week at first – and see how you feel. You definitely don’t want to burn out. Exercise will help your energy levels. Remember the “Sharpen your saw” principle!
