Gravity-powered lamp for your office?

(www.myorganizedbiz.com) – This is so cool! You get quality light generated by the earth – and never have to worry about where to plug it in.

This modern LED-illuminated light generates the equivalent of a 40watt bulb (great for ambient lighting) and recently was awarded 2nd place in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition.

I hate to burst your bubble, but it was a concept that was never built and the winner has admitted that there is no way it would ever work with today’s technology. And others have proven with the math that it likely could never ever work. It was a nice concept though. They should clarify that type of information when they do write ups, I’ve been seeing this everywhere. :)

I just love the novelty of the idea, you know? The idea that it can run off the grid intrigues my green heart.

I figure that even if this incarnation doesn’t fly, it’s a matter of time before gravity is used to generate power. Our current technology, as you say, just isn’t ready yet.

I definitely agree, when I first saw it I thought it was neat, but of course the geek girl in me wanted to know how it worked so that’s how I found all the stuff about how it won’t.

You might like these bulbs I saw in a post on Cool Tools, they aren’t very bright yet, but I’m assuming it’s only a matter of time before they have a 60watt incandescent equivalent. Spendy, but they last 35 years.

We use CFL’s everywhere, eventually I’d love something with energy efficiency and a “warm” light. It continually amazes me how far even something as simple as lighting has come.
