Is Saturday is the new Tuesday?

by Jennifer Hofmann on March 18th, 2008

Conventional wisdom and corporate researchers have said that Tuesday is the most productive day of the week. By Tuesday, the catch-up of Monday is complete and this allows you to really get down to business.

When Glen Stansberry at LifeDev recently wrote about how Friday is the new Saturday, it got me thinking.

There seems to be an emerging trend in home business where Saturday is eclipsing Tuesday as the most productive day.

Basically, Saturday works because:

  • Clients aren’t calling.
  • Email volume goes down dramatically.
  • Some businesses and most government offices are closed (so you can’t visit them).
  • The expectation of productivity by others is lower.

When the work week is over, Saturday becomes the day when you can actually get stuff done.

Guide to working on Saturday.

1. Eat breakfast and go to work in your jams. Bring a warm beverage with you.

Food is good. It nourishes your body and your brain, so when you sit down to work you’re “on.” Wearing cozy clothes allows you to kick back a little bit.

2. Tackle neglected projects.

What can you do on a productive Saturday? Practically anything. I recommend doing projects you’ve been meaning to get to that require concentration.

Do something wild like turning off your IM and cell phone. You’ll be even more productive.

3. Compensate later for having worked on a typical “day off”

Give yourself flex time. When I work on a Saturday, I usually give myself Monday morning off. It’s just a time that works for me, and you can find something that works for you, too.

Most religious traditions have a sabbath or day of rest. Even if you aren’t particularly religious, it makes sense to observe this so your body and spirit can get reenergized. Ceasing work is a way to honor your body and your business.

Do you work on Saturday? Is it more productive for you?
