Open thread - What would you like to see?

by Becky on August 21st, 2008

Pencup-Side SmAs I continue to get settled here at My Organized Biz, I wonder about you all. What kind of business do you have? What do you like to do? What do you struggle with?

What are you looking for when you come here?

This site is for you, and I really want to know what you’re interested in. Do you have a variety of things you like to see? Are you looking for green topics? Productivity? Filing system ideas? Help setting goals? Help progressing towards your goals?

What does an organized business mean to you and how can I help you? I really do want to hear what you think, what you want to read. This is an open thread where you can just throw things out there and we’ll have a discussion in the comments about the topics you would get the most from.

I have just started a small business. My role is to assist small companies with their “back end” - assisting several weekly as a part-timer. This includes heavy accounting and process set-ups. Not knowing what to expect when I started, I am finding SO many people that know how to sell their product, but had no clue how to set up their office/software/paper systems. Many of these put “momma” in the office and she may have been a hairdresser for 20 years, but she is being forced to do something totally foreign to her. They end up with broken accounting, no financials, no concepts on how to handle purchase orders, statements from vendors, etc…and if it’s a man and wife…it can just cause frustration and more stress. The things that come so easily to me are just in limbo for them. Very quickly we can see a turn-around and get some happy faces again!! It’s just boggling to me how many people are contacting me and I am only three weeks into this.
I like your article on “posting” your goals and will share that with my clients.
How should a small business handle all that paper that comes in the mail, is dropped off by visitors, sent by vendors, etc? It would be interesting to me to see how others are handling that. Are there cool gizmos? Do they scan things that may help later?
The other thing is telephones! There are so many options and needs. How are small companies cutting through all the sales hoopla and getting the real answers to their questions? Last thing you want to do is flip the switch with a new system or company and LOSE ALL YOUR SALES CALLS! Scary.

Thanks for this forum. I will be back!

Becky, your commenting system could use a little work–there is no mention of which fields are required and which are optional until you submit, and even then it won’t let you edit and fix, all you can do is press back and it wiped out my entire comment.

So…to retype… Some of my favorite recent posts have been:
    -clear your desk every day
    -make room for cords
    -sharpen your saw soon
    -get out of your rut.

I don’t run my own business (at least not at this point…), but I do work full time–and finding good blogs about how to be organized at work rather than how to organize your house, are a lot harder to come by. I’m mostly interested in organizational strategies that will help me to use my time more efficiently or productively or overcome some of the common bottlenecks of working in a disorganized space. Products I’m less interested in unless they’re profound, green products even less. Filing system ideas are great, goal setting is okay.

Thanks Lanita & Jessica. I appreciate your thoughtful comments. I’ll see what I can do to incorporate your suggestions.

And Jessica, thanks for the note about the comment form. You make a good point and I’ll talk to our designer about that. And your email address doesn’t show when you leave a comment (but you’re welcome to stay anonymous if you prefer).

I’m an artist …and in my spare time (hahaha) I’m trying to create a good system for organizing the business end of my career…I pop into your blog to remind myself of all the things I’m not doing. :) I especially liked your recent posts on goal setting….yup…I think that is my first priority.
    Thanks!
