Pearl Harbor Day – December 7

Pearl Harbor Day – December 7

Take time out from organizing to remember Pearl Harbor Day or learn about it and significance to our United States heritage. I don’t remember the day Pearl Harbor happened, but I recall when the war was over.  Our teacher, at the one-room school, learned of the occasion and let us out from school immediately, so we didn’t have a full day.The siren at the local firehouse was sounding, people in cars blew their horns as a friend and I walked along the road toward our homes. My mom was excited because it meant Uncle Al would be coming home.  By then her …read more

Organizing for Home Writing as for the Library

Organizing for Home Writing as for the Library

I realize, now that our Internet connections are working again, and I can write at home that I need to organize here as I did for writing at the library the other day.
I knew then I had only an hour, two at the most, to check e-mail, check Facebook resources (yes, Facebook can be used for exchange of links among writing colleagues), and post on four blogs so I wouldn’t miss deadlines.
I got all of it done and more in two hours because I’d organized beforehand and knew exactly what I wanted to post about.  Here at home, when I …read more

Reader’s Response to Internet Disfunction Post

Reader’s Response to Internet Disfunction Post

In response to my post, How Do You Organize When the Internet Is Down?, Jessica left the following comment:
I try and do as much as I can “offline” first, like get the emails all composed in outlook, the blog posts typed up, and THEN go the coffee shop or library to hit send on everything. I find I’m more productive at home when working, so I try to take advantage of that, and save the easy part for when I’m out.
I think this is good advice from Jessica and probably is something many of you do.  Unfortunately, neither of the …read more

How Do You Organize When the Internet is Down?

How Do You Organize When the Internet is Down?

We’ve been having problems in our home with Internet connections.
At first, only one of the three computers wouldn’t connect, so I could switch to a different one for my writing business.  Now nothing will connect, and my hubby has spent more than 24 hours troubleshooting.
But I must post on my blogs for my blogging commitments nearly everyday.  What are the solutions?

Use neighbor’s computer
See if our laptop will connect at her house
See if it will connect at the local library’s network
Or use a library computer where I know I can get access.
Use an Internet cafe, but our small town doesn’t have …read more

Organizing Promotions for Specific Groups

Organizing Promotions for Specific Groups

When organizing promotions for your business, consider what group you’re focusing on or targeting.  Perhaps you have different groups.  However, your promotions generally are more effictive if you focus on a particular group at a time.  The same type of techniques might be used, but let each group know how you can fill their needs.
For instance, at Home Biz Notes, I mentioned that online shopping appeals to those with health issues.  If someone with a home or small business has items or services that interest those shoppers (and this can be a wide category).  I also wrote at Small Business Boomers, about statistics …read more

Organizing My Poetry Book

Organizing My Poetry Book

After teaching poetry writing to second graders while substitute teaching the other day, I’m more enthusiastic to get my poetry book organized and my workshops underway.
However, for them to be more than dreams, I need to start organizing and then putting that into action.
So….where do I start?

I did get out my folder of poetry written over the years, some of which has been published in magazines, newspapers and anthologies.  (I’ve retained copyright so that I can include any and all of the poetry into an anthology.)
Read over the poetry
Decide which needs editing and which can stand as is
Make copies of …read more

Organizing Business & Holiday Preparations

Organizing Business & Holiday Preparations

When you have a business, sometimes it’s difficult to organize your own holiday preparations so that one or the other (business or family) aren’t neglected.  You must keep your business going to bring in the income.
Yet family expect holiday preparations, festivities and attendance at various activities throughout December.

Make a list of what you need to do, businesswise and holiday wise.
Some of these might overlap as you make business holiday preparations, too.
Can you involve your family in some of your business festivities?
If you have employees, have them give you a list beforehand of times they need off.  Thus you’re less likely …read more

Do You Need a Personal Organizer?

Do You Need a Personal Organizer?

How can I get out from under this mess? you wonder, as you gaze around a cluttered office, mixed up closet, disarrayed kitchen.
Some people try to find the time to do it themselves.  Others hire a professional organizer, someone who has developed a business of organizing others…their home, office, clothing, closets and life.
Do you need someone to give suggestions but not do the physical rearranging?  Or do you want someone to do everything?
I’m not sure I’d want someone to do all my rearranging because only I know what I need to keep, what I need now, what later and then other …read more
