Think you can drive and talk at the same time?
Wassha shay? Yep. New research shows that just listening to a cell phone can cause drunk driving-type behaviors. And when you work from your car, this has implications for your biz.
According to ScienceNews.com, researchers at Carnegy Mellon University have used powerful MRI scans to conclude that “listening alone reduces by 37 percent the amount of brain activity associated with driving.”
This finding renders null the countless “hands free” laws passed in U.S. states that supposedly make driving safer.
The really nerdy stuff: The ScienceNews.com article explains, “The study emerges from the new field of neuroergonomics, which combines brain science with human-computer interaction studies that measure how well a technology matches human capabilities.”
Combining the cell, vehicle, and human is just a bad neuroergonomic situation.
The Organized Biz perspective: Do one thing at a time - even if it’s painful at first. It will get easier.
Save your conversing until you can give clients and peers your full attention. Use your brain for driving when you’re behind the wheel.
If you think you can drive and listen with 100% attention on both, try this game that simulates multitasking.
How’d you do? What’s stories do you have about cell phones and driving?
