I have been dealing with this same issue – - receipts are my own personal nightmare… but recently I saw an advertisement for this scanner called “Neat Receipts” – - you scan in your receipts and it puts them in the appropriate categories (and learns when you set it straight) I LOVE IT! I highly recommend it… While I was researching the Neat Receipts to purchase it (it is about $225) I also found a site where you send in your receipts once a month and they enter them for you… http://www.shoeboxed.com – I haven’t done it… but sounds like it might work really well too. (they send the receipts back to you)

imo, it’s way easier to enter receipts in a program like quicken than on an excel spreadsheet… took me just a bit of learning, and now not only are the amounts, etc. entered, but they’re in the right cagegories… I keep them in a box… one for personal, one for office… and when the boxes get filled, I stuff them in a freezer bag, seal it an label it. My tax guy laughed… until I was able to find a receipt he needed… and seriously, how often do we need them? Only in theory if the irs comes knocking, right?
