Work-life balance

by Becky on July 14th, 2008

Balanced-Rocks Dizel-Sm(www.myorganizedbiz.com) - Sometimes, as small business owners and entrepreneurs, we find it too easy to work. All the time. There’s always so much to do, right? And if we don’t get it done, who else will do it?

Right now I’m struggling with balancing everything. I have a lot of projects going, a lot of balls in the air. Fortunately, a bigger project is about ready to end. I’m mostly okay with that.

What it will do is free up my time for other projects. The ones that are getting bits and pieces here and there, rather than a good, solid bit of my attention.

There’s still the balance issue, though. For my sanity, I have to find a way to get my work done so I can spend quality time with my husband and son. That’s important to me.

They don’t need me hunched over my keyboard every evening, because that’s when it’s convenient for me to work (someone else can watch the baby, natch).

I need to set some office hours. That’s a bit close to impossible right now, but I’m hoping I can do that in the next couple of months. I think it would go a long way towards keeping away from burnout.

What about you? Do you over schedule? Are you finding a good balance, or do you need help with this, too?

4 opinions for Work-life balance

I am terrible about overscheduling! Because of the nature of my business (online selling), the opportunity to make money is unlimited. I am driven to work more because that means more money. However, there has to be a cut-off point where enough is enough for one day. The true sign of an entrepreneur is having more ideas than time! We just have to learn to balance that with everything else in our lives.

    Thanks for the post!

That’s the thing with work online - it can be done 24/7! Sure, more work = more money, but does your work start to suffer at some point?

I’m definitely working on the balance issue. This week it’s especially bad because I’ll be out of town for 4 days to attend BlogHer.

apparently I am very bad at over-scheduling. my husband says I overwork. personally I probably wouldn’t have noticed anything but it’s getting to the stage where he’s threatening to take away my computer! (help!) my doctor fully sanctions this - apparently I have stress problems… so if you learn how to get us crazy, stressy at home workaholics to relax I’m all ears!

Jennie, I will try to address some of that. I think my husband is close to thinking the same thing. Except for the “taking away the computer” part. He knows he wouldn’t get away with that. ;)

It sounds like you need help with prioritizing and judging how much time you’re actually committing to things. If you want to email me, we’ll see if we can come up with something more to help you a little. Maybe you can tell me a bit about your typical day?
